january 8, 2005 "watching the world" pg 29:.
the roman catholic archdiocese of boston, u.s.a., has announced that it will close 65 of its 357 parishes - almost one fifth of the total.
My wife is Catholic; and I might add was raised in a very liberal catholic houselhold.
The difference in her upbringing and mine was the liberal thinking and education she was raised with and it positive results continue to this day. My dogmatic JW upbringing left much to be desired. There was no brainwashing in my wifes upbringing. If you were Catholic; you lived a good life and no matter what the Church said or did; you lived your life outside of their influence. It is a very different religion than Jehovahs Witnesses teach. This has a lot to do with the Jesuit monks secular education and teaching; materialism is good.
My wife attended private Catholic schools her entire life; and attended Fairfeild Univerity in Connecticut ( Jesuit influence).
She and her family still consider themselves Catholic; their faith still in tact. They may not agree with all the church teaching -and obviously the sex scandels offend them--but they still consider it their religion. They do not neccessarily accept that they are exclusive with God; merely one of many who worship him. Interesting thoughts.....certainly more tolerant than JWs....

on tonight's news:.
dead pets threaten beijing's 'green' olympics.
5:35 pm december 16 .
I have one of each, ( actually my kids have one of each---my wife and I take care of them!)
I like-prefer- dogs; but will admit that the cats are smarter.
i was thinking about how many jws were into the "get rich quick" schemes.
there were many brothers and sisters who went into the pyramid type schemes involving everything from "magnet therapy" to "mallaluca" to "amway" then there was some perfume knockoff home sales, home gym sales, etc.
the lists go on and on.. i am not criticizing anyone that ends up being succesful in any home based business but merely pointing out how many jws i knew that were involved in them.
From a non JW perspective: Older children are usually groomed through High School for a preparation for their future. They are encouraged to choose a profession of which they will excel and pursue the foundation of a future career through college training and education.
Jehovahs witnesses ( to my eternal criticizsm of the faith) deny this thinking and pursuit from their young people. It is substituted with "preaching" and " jehovahs work comes first". Naturally the child wants to "please" and will follow whatever direction is mandated from parents. Some kids rebel ( and with good cause).
What a stupendous waste of opportunity for all those young ones caught in the " theocratic trap".
I was one of them. I am lucky to be where I am now.
i can't take credit for this.
it came to me in one of those emails that circulate endlessly around for years and years... but this one is not one i have seen before, and so i present its finale here, with my personal "amen!
" i was once involved with a woman who had an aversion to almost everything.
I agree with the sliding sideways; the martini ( plural martini) and the chocolate....but I would still like to keep my body in shape for other "romps" before I take the final slide....
honestly, are you a better person now or were you a "better" person when you were a jw?
yes, I am.
I no longer have the "elder in training" attitude that I am superior due to Jehovahs choice and direction.
I try very hard to keep an open mind in everything. I have actually learned to think for myself and make my own decisions. And those decisions are not based on the Watchtower Societies "new light".
I respect everyones faith....and when I have any kind of religious discussion ( with anyone OTHER than the JWs) I approach it with an open mind ( this vs the "closed mind" I had going door to door in my other pioneer life)
My attention is no longer focused on only those who religiously beleive like me. From my initial departure from JWland; if was obvious to me that I was to become part of a much larger scheme of events; in other words, I found my place in the "world" and made myself fit in.
I realize that I never had and never will have ALL THE ANSWERS; and that my mortality is limited ( I am not going to live forever). Once that was put into perspective and accepted;my life took on a routine like every other human being; all of us on the same journey; all deserving of respect.
i was talking with my mom the other day and we got on the subject of my father's funeral.
it old her that one of the reasons my son did not ever want to go back to the kh was because of how i was shunned, even at my dad's own funeral.. she said "i know, he just doesn't understand" - i replied "no - he knows why - he just doesn't believe that's what jesus would have wanted".
she had no response to that.
amazing, isnt it ; how young children have the ability to see the transparacy of those beliefs.
Good for you son for standing up for his principles....and congratulations to you for raising him with the freedom to express his own belief in those principles..
Frank
